Rewind Technique
IARTT (International Association for Rewind Trauma Therapy)

Rewind therapy, also known as the rewind technique, is a type of trauma therapy that aims to reduce or eliminate symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), phobias and anxiety. It utilises relaxation and guided imagery to help individuals process traumatic memories without requiring them to disclose the specific details of the traumatic event. This non-disclosing aspect is a key benefit, minimising the risk of re-traumatisation. In some cases , it can provide relief within the same day, though more typically within a month.

HOW IT WORKS

The rewing technique is rooted in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and involves visualising the traumatic events as a film, then rewinding it back to a safe, neutral point. The process is done while the individual is in a deeply relaxed state, allowing their brain to process the memory and move it from short-term to long-term memory.  This helps to reduce the intensity of the trauma and the associated emotional distress.

WHAT CAN BE WORKED ON USING THE TECHNIQUE

  • Accidents (car crashes, workplace injuries)

  • Assaults (muggings, physical attacks)

  • Medical trauma (sudden illness, surgery, childbirth and trauma)

  • Natural disasters (earthquakes, floods)

  • Bullying or prolonged emotional abuse

  • Childhood abuse (emotional physical, or sexual)

  • Domestic violence experiences

  • Fear of flying, heights, spiders, dogs etc (effective of the phobia originated in a specific triggering event

  • Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks relating to a specific memory

  • Anxiety and panic attacks linked to past events, such as accidents or loss.

  • PTSD symptoms such as hypervigilance, emotional numbing, avoidance of triggers and flashbacks.

The rewind technique helps neutralise the emotional charge attached to the memory without requiring the client to re-experience the trauma intensely.
